No hab\u00eda una idea preconcebida sobre cu\u00e1l ser\u00eda la evoluci\u00f3n de los niveles de ox\u00edgeno. Sin embargo, los datos confirman una tendencia a la baja.<\/p>\n<p>\u00bfC\u00f3mo se mide el ox\u00edgeno de hace 800.000 a\u00f1os? La respuesta es a trav\u00e9s de los polos. La capa de hielo en estas regiones contiene burbujas con aire de la atm\u00f3sfera y cu\u00e1nto m\u00e1s se perfora, m\u00e1s se retrocede en el tiempo.<\/p>\n<p>El an\u00e1lisis, por cierto, excluye deliberadamente los \u00faltimos 200 a\u00f1os de mediciones sencillamente porque trastocan toda la tendencia. Los \u00faltimos 100 millones de a\u00f1os, el ciclo se ha mantenido estable. M\u00e1s o menos cada mil a\u00f1os, todo el ox\u00edgeno de la atm\u00f3sfera se convierte en agua y de ah\u00ed otra vez a ox\u00edgeno mediante procesos naturales. Sin embargo, los \u00faltimos 800.000 a\u00f1os la tendencia es a la baja.<\/p>\n<p>Las causas de esta p\u00e9rdida no est\u00e1n claras. Aparte de lo que consumimos los seres vivos, las rocas de silicatos tambi\u00e9n consumen ox\u00edgeno a escala mucho menor. Una posible explicaci\u00f3n es que la aceleraci\u00f3n en la erosi\u00f3n de este tipo de rocas en los \u00faltimos miles de a\u00f1os haya desequilibrado la balanza.<\/p>\n<p>La hip\u00f3tesis m\u00e1s probable, sin embargo, vuelve a ser el calentamiento global. El aumento de la temperatura de los oc\u00e9anos aumenta la solubilidad del ox\u00edgeno, lo que en teor\u00eda reducir\u00eda el ratio de este elemento que vuelve a la atm\u00f3sfera en su ciclo natural.
